Fix the DaVinci Resolve Media Offline Issue

DaVinci Resolve media offline

If you’re unable to preview your clips and instead have an error message saying that your media is offline in DaVinci Resolve—fear not!

Generally, this simply means that your files have been moved or saved in a different location. The error then happens because video files do not actually live within a DaVinci Resolve project file. They’re referenced between the software and the location on your hard drive.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to solve this once and for all and get back to your edits. Let’s get started!

How to Solve Media Offline Errors

It’s very easy to connect your imported media back into your workspace. All you have to do is tell DaVinci Resolve where your media is.

To relink your media:

  1. Highlight the clips in the Media Pool (that’s the lower window on the screen).
  2. Right-click on any one of the clips (while they are all still selected).
  3. Click Relink Media.
  4. Navigate to the folder where the media files are (it’s OK if you don’t know this. You can scan an entire drive but, that can take a long time).
  5. You may be asked to perform a comprehensive search, which will dig deeper into subfolders, if this is the case, click Search.
  6. This also works with a batch of clips and the process is exactly the same.

Avoiding the Problem in the Future

Unfortunately, the only way to avoid the problem in the future is by keeping everything a little bit better organized. This is a problem that crops up from time to time for most video and filmmakers. And do you really have time for all that organization when you have more videos to make?

When your organization fails, just go through the above steps to get back on track.

We hope you found this short tutorial on how to relink media in DaVinci Resolve helpful. No one enjoys troubleshooting, and hopefully, these quick tips will keep you from experience any future project delays. Here’s to freeing up time to spend on your video projects!
