Learn all about free Final Cut Pro plugins and how to use them.

Final Cut Pro is powerful editing software capable of handling even the most complex video projects. However, compared to programs like Premiere Pro, the titles, transitions, and various control panels might feel limiting. Luckily, there are a wealth of native Final Cut Pro plugins that you can download and install to expand your editing capabilities. Today, Motion Array will walk you through some available plugins, and how to install and use them.

What is a native Final Cut Pro plugin?

You can download Final Cut Pro plugins for most functions, including titles, color effects, transitions, and generators. Native plugins are brilliant because they work in the same way as built-in effects and monitors directly from within the program. By using plugins, you can expand your editing capabilities and enjoy more advanced titles and transition animations.

Part 2: How to use plugins for Final Cut Pro

There are lots of Final Cut Pro plugins available, and it’s easy to get lost in all the exciting potential. Luckily, you can build your collection as you’d like. Once you’ve found a plugin you want, you’ll need to install it before you can get to editing. You’ll first need to close your Final Cut Pro project to do this. This ensures no corruption or errors occur during installation.

Step 1: Install your plugin

Most plugins and Final Cut Pro templates will come with installation instructions. However, here’s a quick guide to getting started if they don’t:

  1. Open up two Finder windows. In the first, go to your Downloads folder and open the .zip file you downloaded.
  2. Go to your Applications folder in the second Finder window and find Final Cut Pro.
  3. Right-click on the Final Cut Pro icon and select Show Package Contents.
  4. Click on the following folders in order: Contents > Plugins > Media Providers > MotionEffect.fxp > Contents > Resources > Templates.
  5. You now have 4 folders to choose from — namely, Generators, Titles, Effects, and Transitions.
  6. Click on the folder that matches the plugin you’ve downloaded. For example, if it’s a title plugin, choose Titles.
  7. Go to your first Finder window and copy (Cmd + C) the plugin file.
  8. Go to the second Finder window and paste (Cmd + V) the effect into the new folder.

You can see this in action in the video below.

Step 2: Edit with your plugin

Since you’ve added the plugin file to the correct folder, your plugin should appear in the matching panel within Final Cut Pro.

  1. Launch Final Cut Pro and open or set up your Project.
  2. Go to the panel associated with the folder you added the plugin to.
  3. Find Effect, Title, Transition, or Generator using the search bar.
  4. Drag and drop to your timeline or clip, like any other Final Cut Pro effect.
  5. Select the effect settings in the timeline and go to the Effects Control panel to change them.

Again, this video will help if you’re struggling.

So, that’s Motion Array’s guide to Final Cut Pro plugins. Some options we’ve discussed allow you to create fresh looks for your videos, while others will boost your technical proficiency. Whatever you use your Final Cut Pro plugins for, you’ll impress your audience with your new skills.
