Part 2: Using your Free Downloads in Premiere Pro

Now that you’ve downloaded some awesome title packs, let’s learn how to use them.

MOGRT vs Template

The first thing to understand is the difference between a MOGRT file and a Premiere Pro template. While both will work within Premiere Pro, they are treated differently. Our 20 free Premiere Pro Titles list includes both Template files and MOGRT collections, so the first thing to do is open the downloaded zip file and check the file type for your titles.

How to use Templates in Premiere Pro

When you unzip a Premiere Template file, it will appear as any other Premiere Project, with the recognizable purple Premiere icon. These template types are project-based – they have been created in Premiere Pro, and your zip folder will contain everything you need to open the project.

  1. Open up Adobe Premiere Pro.
  2. Go to File > Import and select the template in the Finder window.
  3. Hit OK to import the template.
  4. A dialog box will open. Double-check to ensure you’re importing the entire project, then click OK.
  5. In the Project panel, you should see the new title template.
  6. Drag the title file to the Timeline.
  7. In the Project Browser, open the Template folder. Here, you will find individual sequences that allow you to adjust the font, color, and text.
  8. Double-click on one of the sequences and make the desired edit. The changes should be automatically updated in the main sequence.

How to use MOGRT Files

MOGRT files are Motion Graphics elements created in After Effects and can be installed into the Premiere Pro Essential Graphics panel. A considerable advantage of MOGRT files over Template projects is that you don’t need to import them into each project – they will be in your Essential Graphics panel as long as the source file remains on your system.

  1. Open your Zip folder and check the folders contained within it – you’re looking for the folder that contains one or more .MOGRT files.
  2. In a separate Finder window, create a folder where you’d like to save all your MOGRTs and name the folder, for example, ‘DLC.’
  3. Drag the downloaded folder filled with the MOGRT files to the DLC folder.
  4. Open Premiere and go to the Essential Graphic Panel. Make sure you’re in the Browse tab.
  5. Select all of the MOGRT files you want to install from the Finder window.
  6. Drag them to the Essential Graphics Panel.
  7. Premiere might take a couple of minutes to import the files, depending on how many there were and their size.
  8. To use the MOGRTs, select the one you want to add to your project and drag it from the Essential Graphics panel to your Timeline.
  9. Select the element in the Timeline, and in the Essential Graphics Panel, go to the Edit tab, here, you can edit the text, color, font, and other editable elements.

Part 3: Top Tips and Troubleshooting Methods for Using Free Premiere Pro Templates

Using templates should make your editing work quicker and easier, but when you run into problems, you can spend hours figuring out what isn’t working. Here are some top tips and troubleshooting methods to help you out.

Crashing Projects

If you’re trying to use a template or MOGRT file and your system keeps crashing, it could be a number of issues, including a corrupted download, missing file information, or out-of-date hardware/software. Uninstall the file and try the whole process again, including downloading the template. If your system still crashes, try another template.

Text won’t fit

When a template or MOGRT is created, the text box will be set to a specific number of words/characters. In some instances, you can add more words but reduce the text size, but resizing the text box without editing in After Effects is difficult. Always try and choose a template that fits your message.

If you want to find out more troubleshooting methods for MOGRT files, check out our handy guide.

Create Consistency

In a video project, you may need more than one title. While there are a ton of fantastic designs and styles available to download, consistency across your videos is essential. This is why most title templates come in sets, allowing you to change the design of your title while keeping the style the same.

Make sure it suits the brand.

With so many fun and unique titles to try, it can be tempting to pick something just because you like it. If you’re working on your own branded content, this is fine, but when working for a client, your chosen title must match the brand and tone of the message.

Undoubtedly, Adobe Premiere Pro has much to offer regarding text and titles. All it needs is the right blend of creativity and know-how. Try some free Premiere Pro title templates today and see how much time you can save. Good luck!
