Part 2: Learn How to Create your own Custom Glitch Text
If you’re still looking for a glitch effect to include in your own projects and aren’t satisfied with the array of templates above, you can learn how to create your own custom glitch text in no time at all.
This can be done completely in After Effects with no plugins or footage needed. The below overview gives you a very brief topline idea of what’s involved, but you can watch the full tutorial here.
- Create a text layer in a new composition and write your desired text.
- Precompose that layer.
- Duplicate the precomp twice, so you have three layers.
- Use the Shift Channels effect on each layer, make every layer a different channel.
- Add a Wiggle expression on each layer to randomly change the values of each layer.
- Use keyframes on this expression to determine when the text glitches.
- Add an adjustment layer to the top layer.
- Apply some distortion to the adjustment layer by going to Effect > Distort > Wave Warp.
- Adjust the values in the effect: Wave Type: noise, Direction: 0, Wave Width: 4000
- Add keyframes on the Wave Height that match the keyframes of the Wiggle expression.
